Jali Cut Right Through the Wooden Cover
The lattice is not painted on, it is cut clean through the wood, so the openwork catches light from both sides and the pattern shows as much in shadow as in daylight. It is the same jali principle used on Rajasthani windows, shrunk down to something that fits in a palm.
Square and slim, it slides into a purse or a jacket pocket for touch-ups through the day without adding any real weight.

Festival gifting
These go out in numbers at Karva Chauth, Teej, Navratri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal, where a small, useful gift is handed to every woman present. Cheap enough to buy by the dozen, handmade enough not to feel like it.
