Elephant Idol – Handmade Undercut Jali Work, Baby Elephant Inside, Trunk Down, Natural Wood

This wooden elephant idol is carved from a single solid block of wood using the undercut (Jali) technique. The stomach of the elephant is hollowed out to reveal a smaller baby elephant carved inside — both forms created from one unbroken piece of timber. The outer body features a geometric mesh pattern that allows light to pass through, highlighting the inner carving and giving the piece a delicate, airy quality.

Undercut Jali Work – Elephant Within an Elephant

The undercut technique requires the artisan to carve inward through the outer lattice to sculpt the interior baby elephant without breaking the outer form. No joints or adhesives are used — the entire piece is one solid block. The trunk down posture is associated with the accumulation of knowledge and protection of the home in Indian craft tradition. The natural, unpainted finish highlights the wood grain and the contrast between the solid outer form and the delicate mesh surface.
