This Kadamba wood Lord Ganesha idol shows Shri Ganesh ji seated on a traditional chowki beneath a carved arch. The arch carries lattice detailing with an umbrella at the top, and twin peacocks stand on the pillars at either side.
Carved Right Through to the Back
The back of this idol is carved as fully as the front. Most large wooden sculptures leave the reverse flat, because it is assumed to face a wall and nobody pays for wood they cannot see. Here the detail continues all the way round, which means it can stand at the centre of a room, on an open shelf, or on a temple platform people walk around, and it holds up from every angle. That choice is most of why this piece takes the time it does.
Kadamba wood and finish
Kadamba is a fine-grained wood that takes lattice work without splintering, which is what allows the pierced arch. The surface is left in a natural polish, so the grain and the depth of the carving stay visible rather than being covered by colour.
