Painted Only in Parts, So the Grain Still Shows

Animals are carved around the whole surface of this pen stand, but only some areas are painted. Rich brown picks out the carved figures while the rest of the wood is left bare, and the grain runs through the gaps between them.

Leaving wood unpainted is a harder choice than covering it, because any flaw in the timber stays visible. Here it works in the piece's favour, the natural grain reading as part of the animal forms rather than a background to them.

On the desk

At 10cm tall it holds pens upright without them tipping out, and the round base is weighted enough to stay put when you pull one out in a hurry. Pens, pencils and brushes all go in together.
