Close Enough to Read the Expressions on Their Faces

In a miniature this size the faces are barely a fingernail across, and getting an expression into them is the hardest part of the work. Here Radha and Krishna are painted with their gazes meeting, the tilt of each head and the set of the eyes carrying the devotion the subject is about.

Around them the garments fall in painted folds and a backdrop of floral motifs fills the frame. It is watercolour on natural silk, painted in Jaipur by artists who learned the craft from the generation before them.
