Painted on Silk, Not Paper, With Single-Hair Brushes
The silk is what sets this apart from the usual miniature. Colour sinks into the weave rather than sitting on a flat sheet, so the pigments read as luminous and the surface shifts slightly as the light moves across it, something paper cannot do.
The scene is a Mughal court subject, the kind painted for royal patrons in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The detailing follows the same discipline, the folds of the jama and the jewellery worked in with single-hair brushes.
It arrives unframed
Deliberately so. Framing is half the character of a miniature, and a gold vintage mount, a plain black frame or a wide cream mount each give the same painting a different presence. Choosing it yourself means it matches the wall it goes on.
