How is Meenakari painting done?

by KKGIFT STORE 30 Jan 2024

Have you ever wondered how those vibrant and intricate designs on figurines, animal idol, and bird statues are created? The answer lies in the ancient art of Meenakari painting. This traditional Indian art form involves the delicate fusion of metalwork and painting, resulting in stunning pieces that are both visually captivating and culturally significant.

What is Meenakari painting?

Meenakari painting, also known as enameling, is a technique that originated in Persia and was later brought to India. The word "Meenakari" is derived from the Persian word "Mina," which means heaven. It refers to the process of decorating metal surfaces with vibrant colors and intricate designs.

How is Meenakari painting done?

The process of Meenakari painting involves several steps, each requiring precision and skill. Here's a brief overview of how it's done:

1. Preparation of the base

The first step in Meenakari painting is preparing the base. This is typically done on Metal, copper or silver surfaces. The metal is shaped into the desired form, whether it's a figurine, animal statue, or bird statue. The surface is then cleaned and polished to ensure a smooth canvas for the painting.

2. Ceramic powder or red oxide coating on pieces

A coating is applied to each piece and allowed to dry completely before painting. At the time of coating color is added to it like white, blue, red or other colors, in this process we have added blue color and coated it. This process improves the grip of the painting on the piece. And it doesn't come out even by scratching. This coating can be applied with a brush or by dipping it in large pieces.

3. Outline and Filling in the colors

Once the base is ready, the artist outlines the design using a fine brush and black paint. This step requires precision and a steady hand, as the outlines will serve as a guide for the subsequent layers of color.

4. Filling in the colors

Once the design is outlined, the artist adds color using a palette of vibrant enamels. Different colors are used in the painting by embossing these. The artist carefully applies the colors within the outlined areas, creating a beautiful mosaic of colors.

5. Final polishing

Once all the details are added, the piece is carefully polished to bring out its shine and luster. This final step ensures that the Meenakari painting looks its best and is ready to be admired and cherished.
